Writers take from life...the life they've lived and the lives they have been told about. Someone as "cute" as anyone has just as much a chance of not finding someone as another who is not your definition of cute. I do not believe the end was a happy ending. It was more of a hopeful ending. That relationship he starts with Autumn could very well end earlier or worse than with Summer. It could turn darker quicker with her just like leaves on trees during that season.

It was not only hopeful but it played on the way people tend to go for the same kind of person even though it didn't work out before. He's going for someone who as a bit of levity in them as well as a seasonal name.

I was amused.

to J_Jammer: I disagree. If they had ended the movie with Tom getting the job at the architecture firm it would not be ending it on a "dark note". I just felt that taking on the cutsey meeting of Autumn at the end felt forced as if someone financing the movie decided the audience needed a typical Hollywood rom-com ending. Do you really think someone as cute, sweet and silly as Tom would not be able to find someone after Summer? Please.

It is a romantic comedy and therefore ending on a funny note would be required if not necessary for it to be said. Ending it on a dark note would mean it's not a romantic comedy.

The "Autumn" thing was funny and probably would test his determination with another relationship that starts off with something in common with the last.
