(Guest) A Fairy Tale Stuck in the Real World (”500 Days of Summer” Movie Review)

Is love just a fantasy? Considered the anti-romantic film at Sundance earlier this year, 500 Days of Summer is a fresh perspective of “boy meets girl” in the modern world.

A storybook-like narrator warns the audience what they are in for. This is not a love story, but simply a story about love.

500 Days of Summer chronicles the rise and fall relationship between Tom Hanson (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). Tom is an aspiring architect, but has settled for working at a greeting card company. He is a hopeless romantic, whose favorite film is The Graduate and believes that true happiness will never come until the day he meets that special girl. Introduce Summer, his boss’ new assistant. Summer is the complete opposite of Tom. She believes that love is just a trick and that relationships take away any fun that life has to offer.

Of course it does seem a bit corny and contrived, but that’s the beauty of this entire film. It’s a tender slice of life that combines with romantic comedy clichés and twists into a refreshing relationship study that does what most mainstream films are afraid to do: be honest. Read More

(Guest) It’s Official…I’m in Love with Summer!

(500) Days of Summer is what every other movie should attempt to be. It is is a sweet, honest portrayal of relationships with stellar direction and writing, and great performances from the entire cast, with the spotlight on the two leads. The soundtrack is phenomenal. This movie is going to be a surprise breadwinner at the box office – it will make millions and hopefully get acknowledged at the awards ceremonies of 2010.

(Guest) Pure Delightfulness.

(500) Days is pure amazement. It’s funny, witty & of course sadness is included. I loved this movie since I saw the trailer for it. (never knew I could fall for a movie that instantly)
& now, after seeing it twice, I must say it’s one of the best movies i’ve seen for a while now. This movie shows the REAL truth about love.
& of course, Zooey & Joe were amazing in it! Couldn’t have been a better cast than that. Marc Webb did a wonderful job on the film. & the soundtrack! Oh, the soundtrack is just awesome.
I definitely recommend this film to everyone. It’s surely a must see.

Reuters: “Batten down the hatches — the hipsters are coming”

Reuters has posted an article broadly about the indie movie industry including some of the marketing behind 500 Days of Summer.

“This movie [500 Days of Summer] is particularly challenging to put forward in a 30-second spot or even a two-minute trailer,” says Fox Searchlight president Nancy Utley.

The specialty division has thus staged a remarkably prolific screening campaign. Since its Sundance premiere, the movie has traveled to 28 festivals and played 215 word-of-mouth screenings. Searchlight also staged a six-city June 21 giveaway of food and other merchandise at retailers, watching as Twitter and Facebook fueled the events’ popularity.
